Privacy Policy

How Figment SimCare collects, uses, and protects your information.

Effective date: January 1, 2026  ·  Last updated: April 30, 2026

Overview

Palmetto Innovative Education, LLC ("Figment," "we," "our," or "us") operates Figment SimCare: an iPad app for clinical simulation training and a companion web platform at figmentprograms.com for instructors and administrators (collectively, the "Service").

This Privacy Policy describes what information the Service collects, what stays on your device, what is sent to our servers and to third-party processors, and your choices and rights. By using the Service, you agree to the practices described here.

Our Core Commitments We do not sell personal data. We do not display advertising. We do not use simulation transcripts to train AI models. Whenever it is technically feasible, we keep data on your device instead of sending it to our servers.

What We Collect

Students, anonymous by design

You do not have an account, and we never learn who you are Learners do not create an account, sign up, or give us a name, username, email address, student ID, or date of birth. You enter an access code issued by your instructor or institution. Everything recorded about your work is stored against that code, never against a personal identity.

The app records the following, associated with your access code:

  • Session data: the conversation transcript with the simulated character, quiz answers and scores, post-visit evaluation and debriefing, progress notes, and session timestamps
  • Attention summary: if you turn attention tracking on, the percentage of the visit spent looking at each of five screen regions (for example, "65% on the patient"). The underlying camera data is never stored or transmitted; see Biometric Data
  • Generated documents: transcripts, progress notes, and certificates are produced as PDFs on our server and stored against your access code

The mapping between an access code and a particular student, if one exists at all, is held by the issuing instructor or institution, in their own systems, outside the Service. We cannot connect a session to a named person.

One exception: continuing-education certificates Some cases offer a continuing-education (CEU) certificate at the end of a session, mainly for licensed professionals and instructors, though certain cases make it available to students as well. Claiming one is optional. If you do claim it, you are asked for your full name and email address, because a certificate has to be made out to somebody. That name and email are stored with the certificate record and used to send it to you. This is the only circumstance in which a learner gives us identifying information, it is entirely voluntary, and skipping it does not affect the session or your results in any way.

Stored on your iPad only, never sent to us: your choice of Communication Coach framework, whether attention tracking and the zone overlay are on, and your acknowledgement of the AI disclosure shown on first launch.

Instructors and administrators, account holders

Instructors and institutional administrators do have accounts, and signing in is how they reach their own cases, codes, and rosters, whether they sign in on the web at figmentprograms.com or in the iPad app. For an account holder we collect:

  • Your name (display name), email, and password (stored as a bcrypt hash, never in plain text)
  • Cases you author and any media you upload
  • Test encounters you run yourself. Instructors can build and preview virtual patients in the iPad app as well as on the web. When you run a case yourself to test it, that session, the conversation transcript, any quiz answers, and the evaluation, is saved on our servers against your account, and so is associated with your name and email. This is how your test runs appear in your own history. It is the one case in which conversation content is linked to an identified person, and that person is you.
  • Purchase history (seats, authoring subscriptions), payment card details are handled by Stripe and never reach our servers
  • Server access logs (IP address, user agent, timestamps) for security and abuse prevention

Instructor account details are never transmitted to OpenAI, ElevenLabs, or any other AI service, a request to generate a reply or a voice carries the conversation text and nothing that identifies who is having it. Nor is an instructor's identity ever attached to a student's session: student work is recorded against an access code and cannot be traced back to a person by us. The reverse does apply to an instructor's own test runs, which are deliberately saved to their account so they can find them again.

Server logs

Our servers record an IP address and a timestamp for every request, including requests made by the iPad app, for security and abuse prevention. For a signed-in instructor these sit alongside the account. For a learner on an access code there is nothing to attach them to beyond the code itself. Logs are not used for analytics, profiling, advertising, or any purpose other than keeping the Service secure.

Information we do not collect

  • Real patient data of any kind, all clinical content in the Service is fictional
  • Payment card numbers (handled directly by Stripe)
  • Biometric identifiers (no Face ID, fingerprints, or face geometry leaves the device)
  • Audio recordings of your voice, we never receive or store audio. Dictation is transcribed by Apple's on-device speech recognition; on older iPads without on-device support, Apple's Speech framework may process short segments server-side under Apple's own privacy policy, and the app says when that applies
  • Camera frames or video (gaze data is computed locally and resolved into five on-screen regions, no images are stored or transmitted)
  • Cross-site or cross-app advertising identifiers

On-Device vs. Cloud Processing

FeatureWhere it runsWhat is sent off-device
Patient dialogueOpenAI, via our serverYour message and the conversation so far for that case
Patient voiceElevenLabs, via our serverThe character's spoken line only, never your words
Speech-to-text (dictation)Apple Speech framework, on-deviceNothing on supported iPads. On older hardware without on-device support, Apple's Speech framework may process short audio segments server-side under Apple's own privacy policy; the app indicates when this applies
Communication CoachApple Foundation Models, on-deviceNothing. The feedback is written on the iPad and is never transmitted. The exchange it reads has separately gone to OpenAI to produce the character's reply
Attention (eye) tracking, optionalARKit, on-deviceNothing. Gaze is resolved to five on-screen regions; no image, video, depth map, or face template is created or stored
Post-visit evaluation and debriefingOpenAI, via our serverThe session transcript
Session storage, studentOur serverTranscript, quiz performance, and debriefing, stored against the access code only
Session storage, instructor test runOur serverThe same session data, stored against the instructor's own account and therefore linked to their name and email
Saved PDFs (transcripts, certificates)Our serverGenerated on the server, stored against whichever of the two the session belonged to

iPad Permissions

The iPad app requests these permissions only when needed and explains why at the prompt:

  • Microphone: to let you speak to the simulated patient. Audio is processed by Apple's on-device speech framework and discarded immediately. The app remains usable without microphone access; you can type instead.
  • Camera (TrueDepth): only for the optional ARKit attention-tracking feature. Camera frames are processed in real time and never stored, transmitted, or displayed. You can disable attention tracking at any time and use the app fully without it.
  • Speech Recognition: paired with Microphone access to convert your spoken words into text. Recognition runs on-device on Apple-Intelligence-capable iPads. On older hardware, Apple's Speech framework may transmit short audio segments to Apple's servers under Apple's own privacy policy; we never see, store, or transmit those segments ourselves.
  • Network: required throughout. Figment SimCare runs the Figment platform, so cases, the character's replies, its voice, and your saved sessions are delivered over the network. The app cannot run offline.

You can revoke any of these permissions at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone / Camera / Speech Recognition. The app continues to function without them, you can complete an entire interview by typing, with no microphone, no camera, and no speech recognition.

Biometric Data

Plain-language summary Figment SimCare processes anonymous biometric-related data (face mesh and gaze direction) on your iPad, only while you're in an active interview, only to estimate which area of the screen you're looking at. We never use it to identify you, never store it, never transmit it, and never sell or share it.

The optional attention-tracking feature uses Apple's ARKit framework to read face-mesh and eye-direction data from the TrueDepth front camera. Under Apple's App Store Review framework (Guideline 5.1.2(i)), this is biometric-related data, the anonymous geometry of your face, not a biometric identifier. We make the following commitments about its handling:

  • Identity: we do not use the face-mesh, gaze data, or any other biometric-related signal to identify, recognize, profile, or authenticate any individual user. The data is anonymous and is never matched against any database.
  • On-device only: all face-mesh and gaze processing runs locally on the iPad's Neural Engine via ARKit. No camera frames, no face mesh, no gaze coordinates, and no derived images are transmitted to our servers, to OpenAI, to Stripe, or to any other third party.
  • No storage: raw frames and gaze samples are processed in volatile memory and discarded each frame. The only thing persisted to local storage is a per-zone dwell percentage (e.g., "65% of the visit looking at the patient") computed at the end of the session, never the underlying biometric signal.
  • No commercial use: we never sell, share, license, or use biometric data for advertising, analytics, model training, or any purpose unrelated to delivering the attention-tracking feature you opted into.
  • Microphone audio: when you choose to speak instead of type, the microphone stream is handed directly to Apple's on-device Speech framework for transcription. We never receive, retain, or transmit the audio waveform itself; only the resulting text remains in the local session transcript.
  • Optional and revocable: attention tracking is off by default and toggleable from the app's sidebar, under On This iPad. Microphone use is optional in the same way. Revoking the OS-level permission stops all collection immediately.
  • Children: Figment SimCare is intended for adult learners (18+). We do not knowingly process biometric-related data from children under 13 in any form.

How We Use Your Information

Delivering the Service
Running simulations, validating license codes, downloading and caching cases, generating dialogue and evaluations, and (on the web) hosting case authoring.
AI processing
By default, the iPad app uses Apple Foundation Models on-device, your conversation never leaves the iPad. If you opt into the OpenAI fallback, the relevant turn's transcript is sent through our proxy to OpenAI, which processes it under Anthropic's standard API terms (no training on API data). We do not store those transcripts on our servers.
Service improvement
Aggregate, de-identified usage metrics (e.g., which case ids are downloaded) help us improve the Service. Individual session content is not used for this.
Security and abuse prevention
Server logs, license activation records, and rate-limiting metadata are used to detect and block abuse.
Communication
If you have a web account, we may email you service notices, security alerts, and (with your consent) product updates. You may opt out of non-essential mail at any time.
Legal compliance
We may process data as required by applicable law, including FERPA for institutional deployments.

Sharing & Disclosure

We do not sell or rent personal data. We share data only in these situations:

  • OpenAI: when you use the OpenAI fallback or premium TTS, the relevant text is sent to OpenAI for processing under their API data-usage policy.
  • Stripe: payments are processed by Stripe under their privacy policy; we receive a transaction reference and the buyer's email for receipts.
  • Your institution: if you signed up using an institutional email, an administrator at your institution may have visibility into your web account; the iPad app's local session data is not shared with the institution.
  • Service providers: our hosting provider (Bluehost) and email infrastructure operate under standard service agreements.
  • Legal requirements: we may disclose data if compelled by court order, subpoena, or applicable law, and will notify affected users where lawful.
  • Business transfers: in the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, user data may transfer to the successor entity under terms no less protective than this policy.

Retention

Data TypeWhereRetention
Local session transcripts & PDFsiPad deviceUntil you delete them in the app or uninstall the app
License activationsServerUntil the access code expires + 1 year
OpenAI fallback transcriptsNot stored on our serversOpenAI retention governed by their API policy (typically 30 days for abuse monitoring)
Web account informationServerDuration of account + 1 year after closure
Authored cases and uploaded mediaServerUntil you delete the case or your account
Server access logsServer90 days
Billing recordsServer (and Stripe)7 years (legal/tax requirement)

Account & Data Deletion

You can delete your data at any time. Session data is held on our servers, not on the iPad, so deleting the app does not delete it. What to do depends on whether the work was done with an access code or under an instructor account, both routes are below.

Student work (recorded against an access code)

Because we hold no identifier for a student, we cannot locate one person's sessions on request, only the institution that issued the code knows whose it was. Deletion is therefore requested through the issuing instructor or institution, who can ask us to delete everything tied to a given access code or batch of codes. We complete such requests within 30 days.

Uninstalling the app removes the preferences stored on the iPad, your Communication Coach framework, your attention-tracking setting, and your acknowledgement of the AI disclosure. It does not delete session data, which is held on our servers.

Instructor and administrator accounts

To delete your figmentprograms.com account and all associated server-side data (account profile, authored cases, code-ownership records, any test encounters you ran yourself, and purchase history other than what we are legally required to retain for tax purposes), email info@figmenthealth.com from the address on file. We will confirm receipt within 5 business days and complete deletion within 30 days. After deletion you will receive an email confirmation.

Note: deleting your web account does not deactivate access codes already redeemed by learners; those continue to function until they expire.

Children's Privacy

Figment SimCare is intended for adult learners (18 and older) in accredited educational programs and continuing professional education. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact info@figmenthealth.com and we will delete it promptly.

Your Rights

Depending on your location and applicable law (including GDPR in the EEA/UK and CCPA/CPRA in California), you may have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you, correct inaccuracies, request deletion, object to or restrict processing, and receive a portable copy. To exercise these rights, contact info@figmenthealth.com. We will respond within 30 days.

California residents: we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA. We do not offer financial incentives in exchange for personal information.

Cookies & Tracking (Web)

The web platform uses a single first-party session cookie (FIGMENT_SESS) for authentication. We do not use advertising trackers, third-party analytics cookies, or social media pixels. Disabling cookies will prevent web login. The iPad app does not use cookies.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced in-app or by email to active web account holders before they take effect.

User-Generated Content

You retain ownership of cases, characters, scenarios, quiz questions, and rubrics you create ("User Content"). By creating and publishing User Content on the Service, you grant Figment a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to host, display, and process that content solely to deliver the Service to you and authorized learners. You represent that your User Content does not infringe third-party intellectual property rights, violate applicable law, or contain personally identifiable information about real individuals without consent.

Intellectual Property

The Service, including its software, AI integrations, user interface, design, default cases, evaluation frameworks, and the names "Figment SimCare," "Palmetto Innovative Education," and associated logos, is owned by Palmetto Innovative Education, LLC and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws. Except for the limited license expressly granted above, no rights are transferred to you.

AI Technology & Limitations

The Service uses large-language-model AI to generate patient dialogue and post-visit evaluations. Patient dialogue and evaluation are generated by OpenAI, and the character's voice by ElevenLabs, both through our server. The Communication Coach runs on Apple's on-device model: it reads the exchange and writes its feedback on the iPad, and that feedback is never transmitted. The exchange itself has already gone to OpenAI to generate the character's reply. You acknowledge that:

  • AI responses are probabilistic and may occasionally be inaccurate, inconsistent, or off-topic
  • AI evaluations are formative learning tools, not formal competency assessments
  • Figment does not guarantee that AI feedback will be clinically or professionally accurate in all instances
  • Instructors should review AI evaluations using their own professional judgment before using them for summative purposes

Payment & Refunds

Seats and authoring subscriptions are purchased on the web at figmentprograms.com. Payment is processed by Stripe under their terms. Access codes and authoring subscriptions are non-refundable after redemption or activation. If you believe a charge was made in error, contact info@figmenthealth.com within 30 days.

The iPad app itself does not contain in-app purchases through the Apple App Store; access is granted by entering an access code obtained from your institution or the web store.

Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access for material breach of this Agreement, fraudulent activity, or non-payment, with notice appropriate to the severity of the violation. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases. Provisions relating to intellectual property, warranty disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law survive termination.

Warranty Disclaimer

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE OR THAT AI OUTPUTS WILL BE ACCURATE, RELIABLE, OR FIT FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL FIGMENT, ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, OR AGENTS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE, REGARDLESS OF THE THEORY OF LIABILITY. FIGMENT'S TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FIGMENT IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM OR (B) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS ($100).

Export Controls

You agree to comply with all U.S. and foreign export control laws and regulations applicable to the Service. The Service may not be exported, re-exported, or transferred to any country or person subject to U.S. economic sanctions or to any party on a U.S. Government denied-party list.

Governing Law & Disputes

This Agreement is governed by the laws of the State of South Carolina, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from this Agreement will be resolved by binding arbitration in Charleston, South Carolina, under the rules of the American Arbitration Association, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in any court of competent jurisdiction for intellectual property violations. You waive any right to a jury trial and to participate in any class action or class-wide arbitration.

Security Overview

Figment SimCare is built so that learner activity stays on the iPad by default and only the minimum data needed to deliver the Service crosses the network. This page describes the safeguards in place on both the iPad app and the companion web platform.

Responsible Disclosure If you discover a security vulnerability, please report it privately to info@figmenthealth.com before public disclosure. We commit to acknowledging valid reports within 48 hours and resolving validated vulnerabilities within 30 days.

iPad App Security

  • Sandboxed by iPadOS: the App runs inside the iOS sandbox; other apps cannot read its data or reach its files.
  • License token in Keychain: the JWT issued at activation is stored in iOS Keychain, not in UserDefaults or plain files.
  • HTTPS only: all network calls (license activation, case download, OpenAI proxy, premium TTS) are TLS 1.2+. App Transport Security (ATS) is enforced.
  • Default to on-device: patient dialogue, communication scoring, and the post-visit evaluator use Apple Foundation Models on-device; the conversation never leaves the iPad unless you opt into the OpenAI fallback.
  • No third-party SDKs for analytics, advertising, or attribution. The app contains no trackers.
  • Camera and microphone data are processed in real time and discarded, never persisted, never transmitted.

Web Platform Security

Transport & infrastructure

  • HTTPS everywhere with HSTS; HTTP requests are redirected to HTTPS
  • Hosted on managed shared hosting (Bluehost) with LiteSpeed WAF in front of common web attacks
  • Daily automated backups with 30-day retention
  • Network-level DDoS mitigation provided by the infrastructure provider

Application

  • Passwords hashed with bcrypt (no plaintext, ever)
  • Sessions are HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax, Secure when on HTTPS, and stored under a custom session name
  • CSRF tokens required on every state-changing form submission
  • Database access uses parameterized PDO statements, no string interpolation of user input into SQL
  • Role-based access control (learner, instructor/author, super-admin) gates every authenticated endpoint
  • Stripe webhook signatures are verified on every event
  • Authoring endpoints are gated by an active Case Authoring subscription (super-admins bypass)

License Tokens

When you activate an access code on an iPad, the server issues a signed JWT containing the code id, the device id, the issued-at and expires-at timestamps. The token is stored in iOS Keychain. The signature uses an HMAC secret kept on the server and is re-verified on the server for any gated endpoint (e.g., premium TTS); the iPad app may also validate the signature locally for fast denial of expired tokens. Tokens cannot be moved between devices because the device id is part of the signed payload.

AI & Third-Party Data Handling

Conversation text and evaluation requests are sent over TLS to OpenAI through our server-side proxy, and the character's lines to ElevenLabs to synthesise its voice. No account name, email address, student identifier, or access code is included in either request. The Communication Coach and voice dictation run on Apple's on-device models. The coaching feedback the model writes is never transmitted, and the audio of your voice is never recorded or transmitted. This does not make the conversation private from OpenAI: the same words were sent there to generate the character's reply. Our use of the OpenAI API is governed by the standard OpenAI API Data Usage policy under which:

  • OpenAI does not use API-submitted data to train its models
  • Content is processed ephemerally to generate the response; OpenAI may retain it for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring per their policy
  • We do not transmit the learner's name or institution to OpenAI; only the conversation text and (for TTS) the chosen voice name

Stripe handles payments under PCI-DSS; we do not see, store, or transmit card numbers.

Incident Response

If we discover or are notified of a security incident involving personal data, we will:

  • Contain and assess the incident within 24 hours of discovery
  • Notify affected users and institutions within 72 hours where required by law
  • Cooperate with applicable regulators
  • Publish a post-incident summary for significant events

Vulnerability Disclosure

  1. Email info@figmenthealth.com with a clear description and reproduction steps
  2. Do not exploit beyond what is necessary to demonstrate the issue
  3. Do not access, modify, or delete data belonging to other users
  4. Allow us 30 days to address the issue before public disclosure

We do not currently run a paid bug-bounty program but will publicly acknowledge researchers who report valid vulnerabilities (with permission).

Your Role in Security

  • Use a strong, unique password for any web account
  • Do not share your access code outside the cohort it was issued for
  • Keep your iPadOS and the App updated to the latest version
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to info@figmenthealth.com

Our Commitment

We design Figment SimCare to be usable by as many learners as possible, including those who use Apple's built-in accessibility features. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA on the web and to follow Apple's Human Interface Guidelines for Accessibility in the iPad app. Accessibility is an ongoing program, not a one-time check; we welcome feedback at info@figmenthealth.com.

Two paths through every interview Every interaction in the iPad app supports both voice and text. Patient replies are always shown as on-screen text alongside spoken audio; learners can type instead of speak; learners can disable attention-tracking and still use the App fully. No core feature requires a single specific input or output modality.

iPad App

The Figment SimCare iPad app supports Apple's standard accessibility features:

  • VoiceOver: screen-reader labels are provided for navigation, controls, and patient dialogue. Patient text is exposed to VoiceOver as it appears.
  • Dynamic Type: text scales with the system's preferred reading size.
  • Switch Control / AssistiveTouch: focusable controls follow standard SwiftUI semantics so external switches and alternative pointer devices work as expected.
  • Reduce Motion: when Reduce Motion is enabled in iPadOS, animated transitions are minimized.
  • Increase Contrast / Smart Invert: supported via standard SwiftUI semantic colors.
  • Closed captioning equivalent: every TTS audio response is mirrored as on-screen text in the speech bubble; nothing critical is audio-only.
  • Type-to-respond: speech-to-text is optional. Learners can type every response and complete a full interview without ever speaking.

Web Platform (figmentprograms.com)

  • Semantic HTML and ARIA labels on form controls and navigation
  • Full keyboard navigation (tab order, Enter/Space activation, Escape to dismiss)
  • Visible focus indicators
  • Color contrast meets or exceeds WCAG AA on body text and primary actions
  • No reliance on color alone to convey status (icons + text labels)
  • Forms include explicit <label> elements; error messages are programmatically associated with their fields

Optional Features You Can Turn Off

Several features are off-by-default or learner-controlled so they don't interfere with assistive technology:

  • Attention tracking (eye gaze): fully optional and skippable from the Begin Visit screen and the in-session settings strip
  • Microphone input: switch to typed responses at any time
  • Premium AI voices: fall back to the default system voice in any installed language
  • OpenAI fallback dialogue: toggle off to keep all AI processing on-device

Known Limitations

  • The animated patient avatar GIFs do not have alternate text descriptions; mood is always also conveyed in the spoken/written reply
  • The web case authoring tool is content-dense and is most usable on a desktop browser; the experience on small phones is limited
  • Some advanced UI components (color pickers, drag-and-drop reordering) are improving for screen-reader use

Last updated: April 30, 2026  ·  Applies to Figment SimCare iPad app and figmentprograms.com

Overview

Figment SimCare runs natively on iPad. The companion web platform at figmentprograms.com is used for case authoring, license redemption administration, and store purchases.

iPad Requirements

✓ Recommended

  • iPadOS 26 or later
  • Apple-Intelligence-capable iPad (M-series chip)
  • 4 GB RAM or more
  • 500 MB free storage for cached cases
  • TrueDepth front camera (for optional attention tracking)

Minimum

  • iPadOS 26
  • OpenAI fallback enabled (used when on-device model is unavailable)
  • Attention tracking unavailable without TrueDepth camera
  • Premium TTS requires a license that includes it

AI & Apple Intelligence

By default, the App uses Apple Foundation Models on-device for the patient dialogue, the post-visit evaluator, and communication scoring. This requires an Apple-Intelligence-capable iPad. If Apple Intelligence is not available on your device, the splash screen will show the reason and the App will route AI requests to OpenAI through our server-side proxy instead. You can also toggle this at any time in the in-session settings strip.

Network

ActionBandwidthNotes
License activation (one-time)~0.5 Mbps~5 KB request, ~1 KB response
First-time case download~3 MbpsIncludes avatar GIFs (~1–4 MB per character)
On-device-only interviewNone after launchApple Foundation Models run locally
OpenAI fallback turn~1 Mbps per responseSmall JSON payloads
Premium TTS audio~3–5 Mbps streamingMP3 from OpenAI

Firewall note: the App needs outbound HTTPS to figmentprograms.com (and, when premium TTS or OpenAI fallback is in use, the App's network calls still terminate at our domain, the OpenAI call is server-side from our proxy).

Web Browsers (figmentprograms.com)

✓ Fully Supported

  • Safari 17+ (macOS & iPadOS)
  • Google Chrome 120+
  • Microsoft Edge 120+
  • Firefox 120+

Limited / Not Supported

  • Internet Explorer (not supported)
  • Brave (may require shields off for Stripe)
  • Privacy extensions that block first-party cookies will prevent login

Troubleshooting

  1. Codes are case-sensitive, copy/paste from the email or printed handout to avoid typos
  2. Verify the code hasn't already been activated on three devices (each code allows up to 3 device activations)
  3. If the code has expired, request a new one from your instructor or institution administrator
  4. If activation fails with a network error, switch networks (e.g., off the campus VPN) and try again
  1. Check your iPad's volume and the side switch (Silent Mode is off)
  2. Make sure the iPad isn't routing audio to a paired Bluetooth device that's out of range
  3. The character's voice is generated on our server, so a weak or dropped connection can leave the reply silent, the text still appears
  4. The interview always works without audio, the patient's reply appears as text in the speech bubble
  1. Verify the App has microphone permission in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
  2. Verify Speech Recognition is allowed in Settings → Privacy & Security → Speech Recognition
  3. Speak in a quiet environment; the on-device recognizer is more accurate without background noise
  4. If your iPad doesn't support on-device recognition for your locale, recognition may require network access
  5. You can always type your response instead of speaking, the input field is at the bottom of the screen

This means the on-device model couldn't be initialized, typically because your iPad doesn't support Apple Intelligence, the system is downloading the model, Apple Intelligence is disabled in Settings, or the device is in Low Power mode.

  1. Open Settings → Apple Intelligence and confirm it is on for your device
  2. Disable Low Power Mode and try again
  3. The App will automatically use the OpenAI fallback in the meantime, interviews still work

AI dialogue is probabilistic and occasionally produces unexpected replies. To improve quality:

  • Ask more specific clinical questions; vague prompts produce vague replies
  • If the reply is clearly wrong, rephrase and ask again
  • Try toggling between on-device and OpenAI in the in-session settings strip, they have different strengths

If you encounter a reply that is unsafe or inappropriate, report it with your session id to info@figmenthealth.com.

Sessions are saved to our servers as you work, so a session is not lost if the app closes. To find one:

  1. Open History from the sidebar
  2. If the session is missing, it may have failed to start due to a network error during license validation
  3. If the App was force-quit mid-session, the partial transcript may still be present
  1. Verify your Case Authoring subscription is active, without it, save will return a 403
  2. Required fields are highlighted in red; scroll up to find any that are empty
  3. Image uploads must be under 5 MB and in JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP
  4. If your session has timed out, refresh and sign in again before saving

Known Limitations

  • Concurrent sessions: a single learner shouldn't run interviews on more than one device at a time
  • Network required: the character's replies and voice are generated on our servers, so an interview cannot be run offline. The Communication Coach continues to work on-device, but the conversation itself does not.
  • Apple Intelligence required for the Coach: the Communication Coach needs an iPad that supports Apple Intelligence. Everything else works on any supported iPad; the app says so in its sidebar when the Coach is unavailable.
